Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Uğur Özkula: Healthcare Workers Are Subjected To Verbal And Physical Abuse More Than Other Professions

Stating that violence is a social problem that is getting more frequent all over the world, Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Uğur Özkula said that sociologists and psychologists noted a lot of reasons as the source which is triggering these problems such as the changing cultural structure affecting family relationships, economic structure, changes of written and visual media, education, video games and other numerous factors.

Özkula said that we are subjected to different forms of violence each day and emphasised that violence towards women and children at home, verbal and physical abuse in traffic and at work as well as threatening messages of politicians and authorities are all items of this climate of violence.

Making a statement for the occasion of “28Th April Stop Violence against Health Care Workers Day”, Dr. Uğur Özkula explained that the violence against Health Care Workers was maybe one of the most hurtful examples of this unreasonable process among all professions. Also adding that the researches were demonstrating that health care workers are subjected to more violence both verbally and physically than any other professions. Özkula gave the following factors as reasons; problems of health care system becoming a burden on physicians and healthcare workers, undermining the value of healthcare workers and their efforts and continued with saying that logically advancing opportunities to make healthcare more accessible to the administrative sector, properly restructuring healthcare offering institutions, proper scheduling to avoid overcrowding of too many patients in these institutions and raising awareness of the citizens in terms of healthcare knowledge were essential for the solution of these problems.

VIOLENCE MUST BE MET WITH DETERRING PUNISHMENT
“We should not forget that; another problem of today which is as important as violence is getting used to violence.” said Dr. Uğur Özkula stating that no form of violence would be tolerated and both the attacks endured by the healthcare workers who give maximum effort performing their duties as well as any acts of violence which the individuals of the society go through must be met with deterring punishments.

Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Uğur Özkula concluded his statement by saying: “For the occasion of this day on which our desires shall be delivered, I salute my colleagues with respect who persevere in their professions even under the most negative situations as well as manage to reject any form of violence in today’s conditions.”
