Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital Urology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Ç. Volkan Öztekin MD. Gave Information About Common Urologic Diseases During The Summer Season And Ways Of Protection.

Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital Urology Specialist Assoc. Prof.  Ç. Volkan Öztekin MD. explained that some urologic diseases such as urinary tract infections, problems related to kidney stones and acute kidney failure are observed more frequent  during the summer. Assoc. Prof. Ç. Volkan Öztekin MD., mentioned that rise in temperature and inadequate fluid intake play crucial role in the development of these disorders.

Öztekin mentioned that urinary system infections peak during the summer and occur most frequently in women between the ages of 18-40. Assoc. Prof.  Ç. Volkan Öztekin also noted that inadequate fluid intake could lead to low urine output and also when urine stays in the bladder too long it may cause infections and added that  especially the young age group people who spend more time outside is under risk.

Volkan Öztekin MD.,  mentioned that the rise in sexual activity during the summer period also increase the chances that bacteria spread from the vagina to the urethra and forms of birth control such as spermicide, diaphragm also play crucial role in the increase of these type of infections.

Assoc. Prof. MD. Ç. Volkan Öztekin also stated that factors such as dirty swimming pools and polluted seas, poor personal hygiene, wearing tight clothes and underwear could increase the risk of urinary system infections.  Ç. Volkan Öztekin MD. continued by stating the following ‘You can take some steps to reduce your risk of urinary tract infections ; avoid swimming in contaminated pools and polluted seas, increase your fluid intake, empty your bladder soon after intercourse,  empty your bladder when you first get the urge, when you are cleaning your genitals wipe front to back (vagina to anus). Renal colic also known as kidney stone pain disease is more common during the summer. Theoretically, the hot weather and poor fluid intake can lead to low urine output which contribute  to new stone formation and growth of existing kidney stones. Sufficient fluid intake is the most effective way of avoiding these health issues during the summer. In addition, maintaining good personal hygiene habits and protection during sexual intercourse are also effective methods.”
