On the first day of the Religious Feast, a British tourist suffering from a severe neck fracture and under risk of paralysis and even death, was operated at the Dr. Suat GÜNSEL Kyrenia University Hospital using the Neuro-Monitorization System
A severe neck fracture with high risk of paralyses caused by bicycle accident
A British patient registered to Dr. Suat GÜNSEL Kyrenia University Hospital Brain and Neurosurgery Policlinic due to complaints resulting from severe neck pain, following a bicycle accident that had happened one day before, while cycling with helmet on his head. No obvious neurological signs were detected on the patient’s examination. However, x-ray radiography and tomography showed a severe fracture in the second cervical vertebra (Type II odontoid fracture) and the first cervical vertebra, and it was diagnosed that this fractured bone fragment was continuing towards the spinal canal. A relatively minor fracture was also detected in the posterior bony structure of the patient’s 7th cervical vertebra.
It has been monitored through the 3 Tesla high resolution MR grafts at Girne University Hospital Radiology Department that the strong bond structure at the front of the vertebrae was torn and the joint of the fractured bone piece was crushed, and further severe injury to the vertebrae was just prevented only by the tissues at the back of the vertebrae.
Taking place on the first day of the Religious Feast, the operation lasted five hours and a surgery team consisting of 12 staff with 3 doctors performed the operation.
Following the successful operation, the patient was followed in intensive care unit for one night, then taken to his room and mobilized. The post-operation radiological examinations revealed that the operation was successful and no complication developed. Operation was carried out by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Seçer, Head of Department of Brain and Neural Surgery Department of Kyrenia University Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ramadan ÖZMANEVRA and Dr. Meltem TABUK.
Operations performed through the high tech medical systems are performed successfully at the Dr. Suat GÜNSEL Kyrenia Hospital.
