Özmen: ‘’It Is Possible To Keep The Breast Of Three Out Of Every Four Patients Due To The Advances In Breast Cancer Treatment”
Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine General Surgery Department Lecturer, Board Member of the Turkish Cancer Institute and Chairman of the Şişli Florence Nightingale Hospital Breast Health Centre Prof. Vahit Özmen MD. presented the Personalised Treatment for Breast Cancer seminar which took place at the Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital. Prof. Vahit Özmen MD. who gave information about the treatment methods of breast cancer, stated that the life expectancy rate has increased through the recent developments in the breast cancer diagnosis and treatment and stated that local recurrences have decreased.

Prof. Vahit Özmen MD. gave information on the methods that he applies and said; ‘it is possible to save the breast of three out of every four breast cancer patients thanks to the most recent developments in the treatment of breast cancer. Patients can be treated successfully with personalized systemic treatments. Instead of applying radiotherapy on everyone, the correct treatment must be decided in accordance with the patient’s life expectancy, the stage of tumour and its biology and also the results of benefit-risk analysis. Prof. Özmen MD. who shared the 21 Gene Test research results that they have been conducted in recent times, said; ‘we advise patients under the age of 60, especially under the age of 40 to take a gene test.’ More patients will be able to take gene test as a result of the various tests that are currently applied to a limited group of patients.’

A patient’s relative thanked Prof. Vahit Özmen MD. who had treated the patient, and also stated that the most important factor in the treatment of breast cancer is the trust and communication between the patient and the doctor.

At the seminar which took place with an intense participation and interest, Prof. Vahit Özmen MD. met and answered the questions from doctors of Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital and Near East University Hospital, doctors from other universities, as well as patients who were treated and patient relatives.
