Welcome to Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital Ophthalmology Department. Our aim in our department; is to stay loyal to medical and work ethics, respect the rights of patients and workers, and provide the highest health service to the patients from the first moment they step into our offices. Our service starts by giving the most suitable appointment to our patients. There are fields of specialty in our clinics for every field of specialty.

There is a division of tasks between our doctors in order to serve in these fields. Our patients have the chance of logging into our web site's ‘Get to know our Doctors’ page to acknowledge and choose which doctors to examine them.

Since Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia is a university hospital that offers health services as well as academic activities, sometimes we may have to give an appointment to a day that is later than what the patient has desired. Appointments made via phone or over the website are handled by our secretaries and they try to give the best day and hour suitable. You can be sure that we will give you the most ideal appointment by the questions we ask on the phone to understand the complaints of our patients. Since some complaints require immediate examination and treatment it is vital that the patients describe their medical conditions completely. We always give priority to our emergency patients in our clinic. Moreover, we ask the parents to tell their family conditions while performing infant eye examinations.

We ask that you arrive 15 minutes before the appointment considering registration procedures. Our aim is to take our patients into the examination room on time. However, emergency patients are transferred to our clinic since we are a reference center. Therefore some of the appointments of our patients can be delayed. We ask our patients to understand since despite being rare, we may have to make some of our patients wait.

If you had an operation or examination results in the past or you use glasses, we expect you to bring your old reports and results to your examination. If you cannot come to your appointment due to reasons outside your control, we ask you to inform us 24 hours prior to your appointment. This way we can give another patient a chance of appointment.

We ask you to first go to the reception unit first when you arrive at our clinic. Therefore, your examination registration procedures can be completed and you will be taken into the waiting room; the examination and surveys conducted at Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia may be different than other health services you have previously received. We have additional tests we perform on our patients alongside extensive eye examinations. Examination and tests may take 1 to 6 hours depending on the condition of the disease. It is not always possible to estimate this period beforehand. Both of the patients’ eyes need to be dilated in order to perform a complete retinal examination. Patients with dilated pupils may feel discomfort when they are forced to look at the light.

Patients have difficulty especially when they are returning to their homes after the examination. We recommend the patients to be prepared for this and ask their close relatives for help. As a result of the examinations, our doctors will inform you about the diagnosis and plan treatment with you. We recommend that you ask all the questions which come to mind during this period.

Our clinic is under the responsibility of vital tasks such as general Ophthalmology, children’s eye examination, glaucoma (eye tension), eye dryness, aesthetics of the eye region (oculoplastic) cataract diagnosis and treatment, contact lens and application, pterygium, color blindness, retinal diseases and treatments, cross-eye examination and treatment, uveitis diseases, premature retinopathy diagnosis and treatment, refractive errors of the eye diagnosis and treatment.

Along with many fields that our doctors are specialized in, their expertise in child retinal diseases also gains importance during application. They solve the problems of children's eye diseases consulting the new-born intensive care units and premature retinopathy as their focus.

Proceeding with academic activities alongside clinical works, clinical doctors are sharing their information with both national and international ophthalmologists via theoretical and practical training.

Presbyopia:
Presbyopia means “teary eye” in Greek. It is the biggest eye flaw of people over 40 who have trouble seeing, get tired while reading or have blurry vision. Presbyopia generally is confused with hypermetropia.

It is not hypermetropia; it is a different condition. At the advanced stages of presbyopia, it becomes difficult for the eye to focus and individuals have a hard time with near sight. Presbyopia is not a disease; it is a result of the changes the body goes through due to aging.

When the far objects are brought near thanks to the lens inside the eye, the lens cambers and its refraction is increased. The lens gets thinner by stretching when we want to see far objects. The movement of the lens inside the eye is provided by the fibres which hold the lens. The lens hardens and the fibres lose their elasticity with age thus, causing presbyopia. When the lens is forced to make sudden focus changes, especially in near sight situations, fast adaptation and clear vision cannot be achieved.

Symptoms; Blurry vision in normal reading distance, keeping the reading material at arm’s length, headache while doing near distance works.
Diagnosis; presbyopia can be diagnosed with eye examination. It is recommended that people with presbyopia get examined twice a year. Treatment; prescription near sight glasses removes the problem. While presbyopia does not have a certain and effective treatment, researches on various surgical methods about this subject are going on.

Myopia:
If the rays reflecting off from objects are focused on the front instead of the visual cortex, which means there is myopia and the person sees far more blurry than near. The vision can be made clearer with the use of glasses and contact lenses as well as myopia can be fixed with refractive surgery (Smile LASER). The length of the eye’s front and back, corneal refraction, or if any one of them is more than they should be, the images of the objects appear on the front (macula- yellow point) of the visual cortex. People with myopia have blurry vision at far despite being able to see near clearly.

Do wearing prescribed glasses increase eye number? Many people would answer this question yes’ without a doubt. However, many untrue facts amongst the community is causing people to behave incorrectly in terms of eye maintenance.
